Blake Edwards
Following the theme of this months feature “Before they are gone…” I have chosen to highlight the life and career of William Blake Crump a.k.a. Blake Edwards. “Blackie” was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in July of 1922. His Mother married his stepfather when he was just 3 years old. His stepfather and his step-grandfather worked as directors in the theatre and in the silent film industry. This early immersion helped Blake follow them into the industry first as an actor at the tender age of 20 and later as a screenwriter for films and radio. During this period he shared an apartment with another actor just a year older, Mickey Rooney who is still working in Hollywood at the age of 89.
In 1955 he directed his first film “Bring Your Smile Along” and created two of televisions great early detective series “Peter Gunn” and later “Mr. Lucky”. His first Pink Panther movie was made in 1964 starring Peter Sellers. Between 1964 and 1993 a total of 7 Pink Panther films were made. In the early 70’s Edwards abandoned Hollywood for Europe. He was distraught with the studios editing of his films and left until 1979 and his “10”. Blake was back.
Blake was married twice, most notably to Julie Andrews whom he married in 1969. He has 2 children from his first marriage and he and Julie adopted 2 Vietnamese orphan girls. He suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome and still works as a screenwriter.
